Not bright enough

I found they were too dark for my use, so I removed the heat shrink tubing from the cables to see how it works. It consists of an LED in series with a standard diode (to protect the LED from reverse voltage on each AC cycle) and a 150K resistor (to limit current during forward conduction). Simple design, although one diode protecting another in this way is always a bit sketchy - if the protection diode has a lot of reverse leakage, the LED will see significant reverse voltage every cycle, which could eventually damage it . A 1M resistor in parallel with the LED would eliminate this possibility, butthis design does not include any. Is this a real problem? I don't know. 150K doesn't allow much current to flow through the LED, but it's probably the smallest value they were able to use while still maintaining a 1/4W resistor. A smaller value resistor would increase the brightness, but would also get hot, so a 1/2W or larger resistor would be needed, which would increase the volume (and cost, somewhat). Peak current is calculated at around 2.3 mA, but this is only at the top of the AC cycle. The average current according to my calculation (may be wrong) is only 720 microamps, not even a milliamp. Part of the reason the average current is so low is that the LED only conducts for half of the AC cycle. It is off for the other half, because the polarity of the AC is reversed. LEDs generally seem good in the 10~20 mA range, so 720 uA is quite low. Persistenceof your eyes will increase the apparent brightness a little, but it will nevertheless be very weak. For use in a fluorescent lit store where 240V is likely to be found, they are almost invisible.

Perfect little LED light.

I wish I had found them sooner. I started using some that are a little bigger and these are so much prettier. Small and bright, these are very pretty indicator lights. I use a row of these at the RV door to show what's still on when we leave.
