It comes complete with a 100 AMP precision shunt and pre-fabricated cable assembly to allow simple do-it-yourself installation. The unit continuously monitors voltage, current (charging or discharging), amp hours (charging or discharging), battery state of charge, and charging or discharging time. It also monitors the engine battery voltage. This information leads to more efficient use of the battery, which can improve battery life and reduce the risk of breakdown.

How does it work?
A simple, intuitive display shows operating battery voltage, charge/discharge current and state of charge. , and charge/discharge time. The instrument also warns the user when the charge level is too low so that the charge can be discharged or the charge can start working.protect the battery. A resettable amp-hour meter is provided to check the efficiency of the charging system or keep track of power consumption and a second input allows the user to monitor the starting battery voltage. The simple display format does not mean that the internal software is unsophisticated. In fact, two separate algorithms are used. One is based on the integration of amp hours during the charge and discharge cycle, the second is based on an internal adaptive mathematical model of the battery.

This means that, unlike many other systems that rely solely on amp-hour integration, the NASA BM1+ never needs to be resynchronized with the battery.
