The fuel level gauge operates by sending a low amperage current through the gauge meter to ground via a fuel level unit sending with variable resistance. The resistance of the sending units increases or decreases with the. changes in pressure, temperature, etc...

As the resistance of the emitter varies, the amount of current allowed to flow through it to ground changes and the meter deviates, indicating the fuel level.
