A temperature gauge operates by sending a low amperage current through the gauge's meter to ground via a power unit. variable resistance sending. The resistance of the sending units increases or decreases with changes in pressure, temperature, etc...
As the resistance of the sender varies, so does the amount of current. allowed to pass through it until the earth changes and the meter deflects, displaying the temperature.
