A temperature gauge works by sending a low amperage current through the gauges to ground via a variable resistance sending unit. The resistance of the sending units increases or decreases with changes in temperature, pressure, etc.

As the resistance of the sender varies, the amount of current allowed to pass through it increases. to ground changes and the meter deviates, displaying the temperature.
