Electronic tachometers operate by counting pulses generated by the ignition system, alternator, signal generator tachometer or magnetic sensor transmitter. The tachometer is connected to +12 V DC. , ground, and one of the signal sources listed above.

By selecting the correct tachometer and setting the switch on the back to the correct position, you tell the tachometer how much pulses are sent for each revolution of the motor.
