A pressure gauge operates by sending a low amperage current through the gauge's meter to ground via a variable resistance sending unit. sending increases or decreases with changes in pressure, temperature and temperature etc...

As the resistance of the emitter varies, the amount of current allowed to pass through it increases or decreases. the earth changes and the meter deflects, showing the change in pressure.
