When the switch is in the "off" position, it breaks the electrical circuit that is preventing current from flowing. Sierra rocker switches offer a variety of switching functions, SPDT, SPST, DPDT, DPST. Some have a lighted handle and others are lit only from the tip of the handle. Rocker switches are also available with screw or blade terminals, or with attached cables.
