NMEA devices that transmit data are called "talkers" and they connect to devices that receive data. In other words, NMEA OUT goes to NMEA IN. With positive and negative polarity for NMEA data, this involves two wires and, although one speaker can broadcast to multiple listeners (usually up to 5 devices), two speakers cannot connect together without using a specialized multiplexer. A typical installation would be to connect an AIS transponder to a plotter. The NMEA output of the AIS would connect to the NMEA input of the chartplotter.
