The fuel level gauge operates by sending a low amperage current through the gauge's meter to ground via a variable resistor sending unit . The resistance of sending units increases or decreases with changes in pressure, temperature and temperature. etc...
As the resistance of the transmitter varies, the amount of current allowed to flow through it to ground changes and the meter deflects, indicating the fuel level.
