The fuel level gauge operates by sending a low amperage current through the gauge meter to ground via a unit variable resistance sending units The resistance of the sending units increases or decreases with changes in pressure, temperature, etc.

As the resistance of the sender varies, the. amount of current allowed to pass through it until the ground changes and the meter deflects, indicating the fuel level.
