Traditional marine sounders operate at discrete frequencies such as 50 kilohertz and 200 kilohertz, use relatively short duration transmission pulses and narrow-band sonar transducers. In contrast, CHIRP (Compressed High-Intensity Radar Pulse) uses a precise sweep pattern of many frequencies within a long-duration transmission pulse from a wideband transducer. The equivalent sound energy transmitted into the water is 10 to 1,000 times greater than that of a conventional marine echo sounder. The echo energy returned to the transducer is also greater than that generated by a conventional transducer. The combination of CHIRP, a wideband transducer and Furuno's superior digital signal processing provides significantly improved fish and bottom detection.
