3" Shaft - 5-1/2" Stern Tube

The PSS shaft seal is the best-selling marine mechanical seal in the world and is installed as standard equipment by many of the world's most renowned boat builders and shipyards. PSS shaft seal is also recognized as the leading retrofit (aftermarket) seal in the global market. Boat builders and shipyards recognize the benefits and value of installing PSS as it eliminates the maintenance, constant adjustment and costs associated with traditional cable glands. In addition to these benefits, the PSS shaft seal helps eliminate water in the bilge (100% waterproof) and wear on the propeller shaft.

How does it work?

1. Two nitrile O-rings seal the stainless steel rotor to the shaft and will not experience any wear.

2. A main adjustment screw and a backup adjustment screw (2 sets) areused to secure the stainless steel rotor to the shaft.

3. A seal is created between the two flat surfaces of the carbon stator and the stainless steel rotor.

4. Water is introduced into the PSS shaft seal to cool/lubricate the seal faces on high speed vessels.

5. The fixed carbon stator is attached to the nitrile bellows, which is attached to the stern tube (shaft log).

Rotor

The PSS stainless steel rotor is slid along the shaft and is secured to the shaft with 90° set screws for maximum holding power. Precision tolerances are maintained by computer-controlled lathes. The faces have a number 9 micro finish and are perpendicular to the bore to prevent any run-out when the collar rotates. The carbon graphite stator will polish the rotor face during the first few minutes of operation. The stainless steel rotor should not needbe replaced under normal operating conditions. The stainless steel rotor used on Type A PSS shaft seal is made of 316L stainless steel.

Carbon Stator

High density carbon/graphi resin impregnatedThe stator is a composite that is first mixed, molded and then formed under pressure. The blanks are then cooked, machined and lapped. The face of our carbon is finished with 4 helium light strip flatness (measured 0.000044" variation across entire lapped surface). The grade of carbon used in PSS has an operating temperature above 500° Fahrenheit (+260° Celsius), and cannot melt if the seal dries, unlike a rubber lip seal or plastic face seal. The high density of carbon greatly increases longevity and resistance to weathering. wear and tear Several commercial vessels have recorded over 40,000 (over 4 and a half years) continuous operation.engine res on the same original components. The carbon should not need to be replaced under normal operating conditions.

Bellows

Type PSS A shaft seal bellows is made from rubber (Nitrile) and has a temperature rating of -25° F to +225°F (-31°C to +107°C). Nitrile rubber is known for its weather resistance. is exceptionally resistant to oils and non-polar solvents. It also offers good gas impermeability, good abrasion resistance and better thermal stability than most general purpose elastomers.

Barbed Pipe

For high speed vessels, it is necessary that a positive water supply be connected to the PSS shaft seal in the purpose to lubricate and cool the seal faces. There are many sources of water supply, see the water seal installation instructionsSee the PSS tree for more information and note that all plumbing must meet appropriate plumbing standards and practices for boats. In most cases, a slow speed boat that does not have a bearing, the shaft log does not require a positive water supply and can simply be "vented". Ideally, the vent pipe will run at least 2 to 3 feet above the waterline and be as close to the centerline as possible to ensure that the vent pipe is never below the waterline, even if the boat lists. See PSS Shaft Seal Installation Instructions for details on s.eal ventilation.
