Flexible Shaft Coupling for 5" B/W, Hurth - Capacity 13HP/100RPM

R&D flexible couplings are made from a profiled flexible disc molded in a new type of polyurethane that is both strong and resilient. The profiled disc provides clearance for bolt heads and is able to flex freely to compensate for any temporary misalignment of the motor and shaft, due to flexing of the boat structure or. when the motor moves on its rubber vibration isolation supports, the compression on the disc between the two coupling halves and the reverse thrust are taken up in compression on the disc between the two breakage straps. If the disc fails, the steel straps ensure the safety of the coupling and guarantee that the drive is maintained in forward and reverse directions.

To calculate the coupling power. required:
Engine horsepowerr x Reduction ratio x 100 = HP/100RPM
      Engine speed

Ford 150 hp at 2 500 rpm with Borg Warner VelvetDrive 72C reduction ratio 2:1
Engine power is 150 HP, maximum rated speed is 2500, reduction ratio is 2:1
150/ 2500 shaft coupling. It is designed to protect a boat's transmission. The unit will reduce vibration, compensate for some misalignments, isolate the shaft and absorb shock loads.

The flex disc is machined from a resilient and durable polyurethane. It allows the unit to flex, absorbing vibration and temporary misalignment of the shaft and motor due to motor movement or flexing of the vessel structure.

The polyurethane disc is supportedenu by two metal compression straps, one on each side of the flexible connector. These metal straps keep the system in constant compression whether the transmission is in forward or reverse. This feature significantly extends the life of the system.

The R&D MarineThe flexible coupling will also absorb shock loads resulting from gear changes or the propeller hitting a submerged object. The polyurethane disc deforms under light shock loads and is designed to be sacrificial under heavy shock loads, saving costly transmission repairs. If the disc is destroyed due to a massive shock load, the metal compression straps keep the coupling intact, ensuring that the drive system is functional in both forward and reverse directions.

R&D flexible couplings are made from a profiled flexible disc molded in a new type of strong but resilient polyurethane. The profiled disc provides space for bolt heads and is capable of flexing freely to compensate for any temporary misalignment of the motor and shaft, due to flexing of the boat structure or movement of the motor on its insulation mounts rubber vibrations. The forward thrust is taken in compression on the disc between the two half-couplings and the reverse thrust is taken in compression on the disc between the two breaking straps. In the unlikely event of disc failure, the steel straps keep the coupling secure and ensure the drive stays in forward andin reverse.

To calculate the required coupling power:
Engine power x Reduction ratio x 100 = HP /100RPM
     Engine speed
