A temperature gauge works by sending a low amperage current through the gauge's meter to ground via a sending unit variable resistance. The resistance of the sending units increases or decreases with changes in pressure, temperature, etc...

As the resistance of the sender varies, the amount of current allowed to flow. pass through it until the ground changes and the meter deflects, displaying the temperature.
