AnAIS SART (search and rescue transponder) is mandatory equipment for rescue devices on all vessels over 300 GRT. Traditional technology used a radar-type device. However, new legislation allows the use of an AIS SART with performance and cost advantages. AIS SARTs positively identify the victim and provide a regular update of their location. An MKD, ECDIS or Class A plotter will then display this graphically. The S1000 is fully compliant and approved by the IMO as an AIS SART (Wheel Marked) which, when activated, will display a target on any Class A or B transponder system or AIS receiver. As such, it greatly facilitates the recovery of the victim or life raft.

The S1000 uses advanced technologye specialized VHF antenna to provide exceptional range (typically up to 10 NM) and has a battery life of 96 hours in operation. It comes with a storage bag and mounting bracket and has a built-in 1m telescopic pole so it can be used in a life raft. The device's built-in 50-channel GPS provides a very fast first fix time (typically less than 40 seconds). Thereafter, it is capable of transmitting position information 8 times per minute.

The SART displays as a SART target on any AIS system and a safety message (SART ACTIVE) is sent every 4 minutes. The S1000 SART also offers considerable safety benefits for recreational users and should be part of any safety package for coastal or ocean sailing.
