A temperature gauge operates by sending a low amperage current through the gauge's meter to ground via a variable resistance sending unit. The resistance of the sending units increases or decreases with changes in pressure and temperature, etc...
As the resistance of the sender varies, so does the amount of current allowed to pass through it. until the mass changes and the meter deviates, displaying the temperature.
