The PSS Shaft Seal is the best-selling marine mechanical seal in the world and is installed as standard equipment by many of the world's most reputable boat builders/yards. PSS shaft seal is also recognized as the leading retrofit (aftermarket) seal in the global market. Certified by Bureau Veritas, ABS and Rina: Boat builders/yards recognize the benefits and value of installing PSS as it eliminates the maintenance, constant adjustment and costs associated with traditional cable glands. Besides these beforeages, the PSS shaft seal helps eliminate water in the bilge (100% waterproof) and wear on the propeller shaft.. The PSS shaft seal can be easily retrofitted and is available for shafts ranging from 3/4" (20 mm) to 6" (150 mm).
The PSS shaft seal is a mechanical face. seal that is created between the flat surfaces of the rotating stainless steel rotor and the fixed carbon flange. The carbon fixed bridle is attached to the ship's stern tube with hose clamps and the carbon bridle is attached to the front of the bellows with hose clamps. The stainless steel rotor is mounted on the shaft in front of the carbon flange. The stainless steel rotor is used to compress the bellows before the collar is attached to the shaft with set screws. This compression (preload) maintains contact between the faces and allows the PSS to compensate for propeller thrust. The carbon flange is reamed larger than the diameter of the arbre, which allows it to "float" around the shaft and thus compensate for most misalignment and vibration problems. The stainless steel collar is sealed to the shaft with two O-rings recessed into the collar bore. These O-rings rotate with the stainless steel shaft and rotor and experience no wear during operation.
**As with any rubber hose below the waterline, PSS bellows must be inspected regularly for signs of wear, aging or chemical deterioration. PYI suggests, as preventative maintenance, that the PSS bellows be replaced every six years. When replacing the bellows, it is recommended to also replace the stainless steel rotor O-rings and adjustment screws. acid fumes will accelerate the deterioration of the rubber, as will an ozonator.
The maintenance kit includes the items you needcare to properly maintain your PSS shaft seal. Kit includes one (1) PSS and two (2) bellows. O-rings, five (5) set screws, four (4) new hose clamps and an Allen key.
PSS Type A Shaft Seal is a mechanical end seal. The sealing surface is formed between the plane of the stainless steel rotating rotor and the fixed carbon fiber bearing.
